“There is some truth in every lie”, or at least that’s the way the saying goes.

This can be very true when it comes to illness where so many unqualified people seem to have the need to tell you what you should and should not be doing. This article will dispel some of these theories which in some cases can do serious harm to the diabetic.

I remember someone telling me that as I now had type 2 diabetes, a piece of chocolate could kill me! I though they were a friend, but I couldn’t help wonder if they were just trying to irritate me!

Those most impressionable, in other words a diabetic who has only just discovered that they have the disease, are most at risk from absorbing this sort of “advice”, and being pretty miserable as a consequence. Small doses of chocolate is fine and may even be necessary to recover from a hypoglycaemic event.

Sure, you want to keep blood sugars under control, but close monitoring will not just save you from some of the health consequences later in life, it will also give you an indication of when you can safely eat some sugary food.

The next myth concerns “miracle cures”. All over the internet people are trying to make money, and that’s fine. It,s not fine however, when people claim to have one of these never before heard of cures for a disease like diabetes.

Given the potential long term health complications as a result of being a type 1 or type 2 diabetic, it can be very tempting to turn to the various “miracle cures” available through the anonymity of the internet these days. However, these very same potential health complications should be scary enough for you not to want to take a gamble. Diabetes has no cure – fact. Take only recognised medication.

Another myth is the “insulin means death” myth. Some people that when you are given insulin, the game is over.

This again is utter rubbish. If the pancreas stops producing insulin altogether, injecting insulin is simply giving your body what the pancreas can no longer provide.

Even more importantly, as research discovers more about this disease and new drugs are produced, people are actually coming off insulin injections altogether.

As long as diabetics of whatever type pay close attention to their blood sugars and take the correct medication as prescribed, there is no reason a t all to die before your time.
