Pregnant women who have diabetes need treatment to keep her blood sugar levels from rising. The goal to doing this is by giving just enough calories and nutrients to help the woman sustain the pregnancy without the increased sugar levels. Most women who need this type of management, a gestational diabetes diet, do not need any type of hospitalization. This will give a quick look at how to treat these women.
The treatment begins with gestational diabetes diet, and it is maintained at 2000 to 2500 kilocalories per day. If a person was given 1700 kilocalories per day, a reduction in the size of the fetus would not be seen. If the mother took in 50 percent carbohydrates, they would see weight gain, and she would be hyperglycemic after meals.
